In partnership with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), we have signed a joint venture agreement to establish the Shiroro solar power project company, addressing the urgent need for clean and accessible energy. The 20MW pilot project (phase 1a) is part of a larger 300MW solar program co-located within NSP’s 600MW Shiroro Hydroelectric Power Plant in Niger State. Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Kashim Shettima, who witnessed the ceremony, emphasized the project’s significance for Nigeria’s energy transition and economic growth. The initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to renewable energy, creating jobs and enhancing energy security.
The Project will be hybridized with the Company’s existing hydropower plant thereby enabling a complementary operation which will increase energy generation and improve the reliability of power output. The hybridization allows the solar panels to generate electricity during the day and the dry season, while conserving water for hydroelectricity generation all year round. Furthermore, hydro synergy allows non-intermittent solar power to be converted into firm dispatchable power thereby matching customer demand profiles.
The Project will be executed in 4 Phases commencing with a Pre-Phase I pilot project of 20MW which will form a hydro-synergy project with the Company’s hydro asset. Thereafter, Phase I will be 80MW and subsequent phases of 100MW each. In this regard, the relevant licenses, permits and approvals such as generation license, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) certificate, transmission connection from Ministries and Regulatory agencies have been obtained.
